Education has been a priority area for Commonwealth governments since 1959, when Ministers first met in Oxford. As member countries share remarkably similar education systems and institutions, this ‘network-of-networks’ has led the way in the sustainable and equitable internationalisation of education at all levels:
- Over 25,000 alumni of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan
- 30+ official organisations dedicated to excellence in education
- 17 pan-Commonwealth summits of education ministers
- World’s oldest inter-university network (Association of Commonwealth Universities)
- Creation of the world’s first Virtual University for Small States
- Assisting many Ministries of Education and Higher Education with policy development, capacity building and institutional strengthening
- Pioneering of first UN-ratified Protocol on sustainable teacher recruitment and migration
