The College of Medicine of Benguela was founded in 2008 following agreements between the Republic of Angola and the Republic of Cuba, with the full support of the government of Benguela Province.
Since 2009, the College of Medicine of Benguela started at the Faculty of Medicine University Katyavala Bwila (FMUKB) following the resizing of the Universidade Agostinho Neto and the creation of academic institutions, through Decree #7/09, 12/05/2009 of the Council of Ministers.

The primary scope of FMUKB is the integral training of high level medical personnel that meets the problems and health needs of the population.

At the end of the 2013 academic year, 57 graduands graduated in Medicine – the first Benguela trained physicians – who will help to improve the coverage of doctors in the country.
The ceremony of awarding diplomas to new doctors, hosted by the Rector of the University Katyavala Bwila and the Dean of FMUKB, was held on 11 April this year in a ceremony chaired by the Angolan Minister of Higher Education and attended by the Cuban Minister of Health, the Governors of the provinces of Benguela and Kwanza Sul, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in Angola, and other dignitaries.
