The ministry charged with administering the education sector of the country is the Ministry of Education. Its aim is to give every Maldivian access to quality primary and secondary education with widening opportunities for higher education and training. It aims to provide an education which maximises individual potential while at the same time instill religious and cultural values that will foster social unity and harmony and allow them to become international citizens. Notable departments within the Ministry include the Department of Public Examinations, the Centre for Continuing Learning and the Text Book Evaluation Committee.
Public spending on education was 7 per cent of GDP in 2011.
Broadband-enabled teacher resource centres are established on each of the 20 administrative atolls, creating a single learning community across all the 200 inhabited islands that links teachers with administrators and teacher-trainers. At the resource centres teachers access a dedicated website where they can download syllabuses, lesson plans and support materials; and share their own ideas and experience with colleagues on other islands. Up to 400 teachers at a time can receive online in-service training.
