There are 12 years of compulsory education starting at age five, offered by state, private and church schools. Primary school comprises seven years and secondary six, with cycles of four and two years. Some 74% of pupils complete primary school (2009).
The school year starts in September.
There are a number of independent or private schools in St Kitts and Nevis, around seven at the primary level and four at the secondary level. St Christopher’s preparatory, The Montessori School and St Theresa’s, all located on St Kitts, provide both primary and secondary teaching. The Lynn Jeffers High School is the only independent high school on the island of Nevis. Bellevue International Primary is the only independent primary level school on Nevis, whereas St Joseph’s Primary, Seventh Day Adventist Primary and the Maurice Hillier Memorial School are all located on St Kitts. In order for foreign students to attend school in St Kitts and Nevis, parents must make an application to the Ministry of National Security for permission to be enrolled in classes.
