The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development has responsibility for primary and secondary education and provides support for tertiary education. The Ministry is also responsible for establishing policies, standards and for supervising early childhood education. Prominent related agencies include the Curriculum Unit, which is in charge of maintaining a curriculum framework, providing teaching materials and examinations; and the National Documentation Centre Database and the National Library Services, which service the country’s libraries and archiving needs.

Public spending on education was 4 per cent of GDP in 2010.
Free textbooks are provided for all primary school pupils and for secondary students in Years 1-3. The Education Trust Fund provides financial support to students who lack the means to complete secondary school.
