Governance in Canada

Education in Canada is administered via provincial or territorial government, and so there are various ministries responsible for education throughout Canada. Some regions have a single ministry, such as Saskatchewan, whose ministry for education is called Education Saskatchewan. Other regions have two ministries, such as Ontario, which has the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. An intergovernmental body – the Council of Ministers of Education (CMEC) – exists to discuss policy, undertake projects of mutual interest and to ensure that provinces and territories fulfil their constitutional responsibility for education. There are many province-based agencies involved in education, such as the Open Learning Agency (OLA), which provides opportunities for lifelong learning and training to citizens of British Columbia.
