Public spending on education was 3 per cent of GDP in 2009.
Over the years, the international agencies that have assisted the government with its basic education plans have included the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), the UK Department for International Development, UNESCO, UNICEF and Caribbean Development Bank.
In January 2012 the country embarked on a national consultation prior to the preparation of a new Medium-Term Development and Strategic Plan, which was intended to embody a comprehensive and integrated approach to economic and social planning.
UNESCO, UNICEF and Caribbean Development Bank have provided support for those who are responsible for preparation and implementation of education sector component of the plan.
