Public examinations are managed by the West African Examinations Council, which was established in 1952 by four Commonwealth governments, The Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, with its headquarters in Accra, Ghana, and a national office in Nigeria. The council conducts exams in all member countries for senior secondary school leavers (the West African Senior School Certificate Examination); and on a national basis for junior secondary school leavers and business studies students. It also conducts the exams of certain foreign professional bodies and exam boards.
